Self awareness and self regulation are key components to life long happiness. Before we learn how to self regulate, we first learn through co-regulation. Care providers (teachers and parents alike) regulate learners through mirror neurons. Our brains sync up and can regulate one another. Co-regulation includes building and maintaining warm relationships, environmental structures, and positive skill instruction.
Whenever we look at challenging behavior, it is important to look at the environment where the behavior happens. How is the environment supporting that behavior? Supportive learning environments provide a safe place to make mistakes, learn, grow, and celebrate learners when they hit milestones. What behavioral skills do we want to teach as a replacement behavior instead? Systematically teaching social and emotional skills takes deliberate practice that helps the learner advance. We also want to look at how we might inadvertently reinforce challenging behavior and how we intentionally make sure that we reinforce desirable behavior instead.
Intentional and routine self care practices for care providers is essential for co-regulation. The moments where you think you have the least amount of time for self care are the moments you need it the most. Let's explore strategies that can help you with your own social and emotional wellness.
